Our health is not for sale! Take action on 7th of April PEOPLE'S health day!

Most of us are getting ready for action on the 7th of April, world health day. PHM renamed this as a PEOPLE’S health day.

Any initiative in the struggle for health that you may be organising during, or around, the 7th of April can be strengthened by making the link to the global mobilisation. Also, you will inspire others by sharing what you are doing and what are the main struggles in your country and region.

The Arrest of the Turkish Medical Association Leadership is a Threat to the Human Rights of Health Professionals Everywhere

On January 30, 2018 eleven members of the Central Council of the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) were arrested after realeasing a brief public statement affirming that war in Syria is a human-made public health problem and that the medical profession has an obligation to defend life and help to build an environment of peace.

President Erdogan denounced the "so-called Turkish Medical Association” as "terrorist-lovers". He was reported two days later as saying: "They are not intellectuals, they are a gang of unthinking slaves... They are the servants of imperialism.

Managing the conflicts between private interests and public responsibility

It seems that the Global Fund believes that it can address the challenges of AIDS, TB, and malaria while accepting funds from corporate investors and the alcohol and food industries. But are the Global Fund’s important efforts in fighting AIDS, TB, and malaria worth the risks that private partnerships might bring to health systems, alcohol policy implementation, and NCDs?

WHO's Executive Board (EB) will meet in a special session on 22-23 November to consider the proposed 13th General Program of Work (GPW13). This is the fourth special session of the EB, hence EBSS4.

18th IAHPE conference – A radical agenda for public health research

Researchers, academics and activists – many of them linked to the People's Health Movement – came from all over the world to share and exchange on the topic of “European health policies in the era of capitalist crisis and restructuring”. The conference provided a rich space to build critical analysis of the connections between political economy and health, and to discuss extremely relevant issues such as the right to health for refugees and the links between the health of people and the health of the planet.

PHM Zimbabwe Applauds WHO’s Stripping of Mugabe’s Ambassadorial Role

The People’s Health Movement (PHM) Zimbabwe applauds the World Health Organisation (WHO) for swiftly withdrawing the appointment of President Robert Mugabe as the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in light of the current shambolic state of public health delivery system in Zimbabwe. The movement was shocked by this inappropriate honour considering the apparent lack of political will to address mounting health problems affecting the country. 

Health through Peace

From 4 to 6 September, Medact and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) brought together health professionals and peace activists to debate, educate and advocate for social justice and demilitarisation.

PHM was present and presented on the need for a greater reinforcement of PHM targeting determinants of health directly driven by those at the grass roots which is necessary to achieve success, despite the increasingly pervasive influence in health of global powers and corporations.

PHM statement on the plight of the Rohingya community

The People’s Health Movement expresses deep concern on the plight of hundreds of thousands of people of the Rohingya community who have had to flee their homes in Myanmar. Faced with state sponsored violence in Myanmar, over 500,000 refugees have taken shelter in Bangladesh in the past month. They join over 300,000 refugees already in Bangladesh. An additional 40,000 are in refugee camps in India. The forced migration of Rohingyas from Myanmar has precipitated a major humanitarian crisis, which is linked to an acute health crisis among the Rohingya refugee population.

Lancet Letter: Defending academic and medical independence in Turkey

Letter to the Lancet standing in solidarity with the Turkish colleagues and fellow professionals who have lost their jobs, as well as insisting that restitution of civil rights is a prerequisite for the right to health.

People's Health Movement 2016 Annual Report

Since its inception in 2000, PHM has played an increasing and significant role in global health: increasing capacity of community activists to participate in global health; monitoring global health policies and governance; and providing publication and a platform for engagement, advocacy and action around health for all. Much of this work has been carried out on a limited budget, with a small secretariat, and drawing significantly on volunteers. Despite resource constraints, during the course of 2016 PHM strengthened and expanded, particularly in Europe and in West and Central Africa.

PHM Europe Istanbul meeting - Final Declaration!

PHM Europe met in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 24-25. 30 people representing groups and networks in Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, UK endorsed a final declaration, that contains concrete proposals for action in solidarity and support of the Turkish Academics for Peace, as well as a road map towards 7th April 2018, a people's health day to oppose health commercialisation and reclaim health for all!

PHM/Ghana presents civil society's position to the Ghana delegates attending WHA70!

PHM Ghana, Health Services Workers' Union of TUC and other civil society organisation participated in an extensive civil society consultation of the issues to be discussed at WHA70. On the 17th of May, PHM Ghana met with the head of Ghana's delegation to WHA to present civil society's position. The position paper prepared was submitted to the Ministers office and all of Ghana's delegations including the executive secretary in Ghana who is the permanent rep to WHO Executive Board and World Health Assembly.
