The Current Challenges and Role of PHM in Advocacy of Health for All in Nepal

Tara Ballav adhikari 1 , Shiva Raj Mishra 2

Nepal has passed through series of upheavals. It never had smoother time in history and escaped from engulf of British Empire, fought against patron of Rana rulers and out rooted monarchy. Feudalistic society always dominated the sphere with development being centered. Just the upper class had total control over all the resources, power and politics. Small landlocked country bounded by two powerful nations China and India struggling with each other in global power politics. Nepal always faced the fragile governance. The conflicting interest of two nations to keep control over the surrounding kept the Nepali politics fragile. But we out-rated colonizers even when they were at maximum power. Sometimes power holders come to governance and time ahead they fail thus bringing inconsistent governing system. Thus the class division was a dominant character in nation; upper class leading the nation and lower class striving for the survival. This led to insurgency and class struggle concluding to 10 years long civil war initiated with the issue of addressing the inequalities and uprooting feudal. As its consequence, it formed the constituent assembly and swept away the monarchial system to establish republican system in the year 2006 AD. The situation worsened thanks to unqualified politicians and pertaining international intervention. Notwithstanding, some good thing happened.

Vienna+20 Civil Society Organizations Declaration: Reclaiming the Primacy of Human Rights

Date:
Fri, 07/05/2013

Claudio, on behalf of PHM, participated in the Vienna +20 civil society and official UN meetings in Vienna in June.
Vienna+20 celebrated 20 years from the historic Vienna Declaration and Plan of Action on human rights.
Although much was achieved in these 20 years, much did not materialize and needs to be forcefully restated.
That is what  the civil society declaration did after 2 days of deliberations and a long preparatory virtual process.
The official meeting sponsored by the Austrian Government and the OHCHR followed, but did not come out with a declaration.

The PHM approach to human rights and Health for All

This two page summary statement on PHM's position on the Right to Health has been developed by several PHM persons-- all of whom participated in the 2 year process to develop phase 2 of the Right to Health Campaign.  This was shared in sub-plenaries and workshops devoted to the Right to Health during PHA3 in Cape Town from 6-11 July, 2012.
This summary is an excellent distillation of the the longer position papers and documents that were developed by the Right to Health commission between 2010 and 2012.

RTHCampaign - PHASE II

Date:
Tue, 02/21/2012

Following some years of coordinating PHM’s Global Right to Health Campaign (RTHC), a Commission was set up in December 2009, tasked with defining the next phase for the global campaign. The Commission was asked to move the campaign from assessment phase to mobilisation and to propose ways for better integration of the RTH within PHM programmes. The Commission has proposed that the RTH be one of the overarching paradigm for PHM globally and proposed actions to more effectively use the RTH for movement building, focusing on networking, mobilisation and on capacity building.

PHM Right to Health and Health Care Campaign update Aug 2011

Date:
Sun, 08/14/2011

It is time again to give an update where the campaign has gone since the beginning of this year.

As many of you know, the campaign underwent an internal evaluation. A PHM committee was formed last year. It carried out a survey of around 20 campaign sites in as many countries. Once the results were in, a phone or skype follow-up contact was made to clarify issues and to gather additional information.
This valuable information was used by the committee in repeated skype meetings to draft a document outlining where the campaign is going to go from now on.

Note on Right to Health activities by Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (PHM-India) during recent period

Date:
Tue, 08/10/2010

Since its formation following the ‘National Health Assembly’ in 2000, within Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (PHM-India) there has been a strong perspective to oppose the weakening of public health systems, to make health systems accountable and effective, to counter commercialization of health care, and to ensure access to health care for all within a broader ‘Right to health’ framework.
