Solidarity with migrants, immediate closure of all Centres for Identification and Expulsion (CIE)
We are currently witnessing the protest by a group of desperate migrants detained in a Centre for Identification and Expulsion (CIE) in Rome. Some of the migrants have literally sewn their lips together and many others have joined the protest through hunger strikes.
This is yet another protest by migrants, forced to take extreme forms of self-harm which they see as the only way to draw attention to their situation, using media pressure to get the authorities to listen.

The People ’ s Health Movement (PHM)1 strongly condemns violent acts by state authorities against members of civil society across Turkey. The PHM is particularly concerned about the use of chemical agents used to suppress demonstrations, causing danger to the health of the demonstrators affected, as recently disclosed by a cross-sectional survey conducted by the Turkish Medical Association .
The People’s Health Movement (PHM) strongly condemns the latest Israeli military operation in the besieged Gaza Strip. At the time of issuing the statement, a total of 25 people have been killed and more than 250 injured. Six of those killed are children. PHM calls on civil society organizations and citizens to put pressure on their governments to condemn the aggression on the people of Gaza and to allocate aid assistance and disaster relief to the Strip's 1.6 million people.

30 health workers, teachers, community organizers, and allies gathered outside the Philippine Consulate in Vancouver on the eve the Philippines Presidential Inauguration to the demand the release of 43 health workers that have been detained since February 6, 2010.
The People’s Health Movement, a global network bringing together grassroots activists, civil society organizations, academics and health workers from around the world, condemns the action by the Malawian judicial system in sentencing Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, a gay couple, to 14 years in imprisonment in Blantyre, Malawi for committing “unnatural acts” based on outdated colonial laws.

Health activists gathered here in Geneva for the World Health Assembly (18-22 May) are expected to lobby the UN health body and governments to declare global downturn a health emergency.
